Haworth Hobble (Wuthering Hike)

Three senior runners from Saint Helens Sutton Athletics Club took on an epic Ultrathon in Yorkshire – the Haworth Hobble. An Ultrathon is any race above a marathon distance but typically starting at 32miles. The Hobble is 32 miles with a staggering 4,400 feet of climb.

Mark Liptrot, Greg Carns and Gary Oldham started the race from Haworth at 8 o’clock in the morning. The race travelled west from Haworth, home of the Bronte Sisters, across the gritstone moors, over hill and past reservoirs towards Burnley. After 10 miles the race loops south for another 10 miles, to take on the lung busting Stoodley Pike. Then north through Hebden Bridge, Heptonstall and back to Haworth.

Mark lead home with an awesome 4 hours and 54 minutes, 2nd in the over 50’s category. Greg in at 5 hours 21 minutes a new personal best by over 20 minutes. Gary came in after a gruelling 6 hours and 17 minutes of running. Gary guaranteed a personal best on his first outing.

Don’t think you could run an Ultrathon ? Well think again. Experience shows with Mark a long time member, Greg just 5 years and Gary only 2 years. So pull on those trainers and join the Club. Start small with the, now very popular, Saint Helens parkrun. 3 miles, every Saturday at 9 o’clock in Victoria Park.

2015 Club Fell Running Championship

Firstly, belated congratulations to our 2014 champions, Mark Liptrot and Sonya Monaghan, who were crowned King and Queen of the Fells respectively - well done!

Also thanks to everyone who raced and made the inaugural St Helens Sutton fell champs a success. We had some good turnouts, with the white, black and red vest proudly on show in numbers never seen before at a fell race. It was particularly refreshing to see the positive attitude of newcomers to the fells - judging by the smiles I think everyone enjoyed themselves!

The 2015 fell champs has 11 races and your best 5 races will count. There is a good mix of races in there with some shorter local races along with classics like the International Snowdon Race. If you struggle to get to races at weekends it's possible to qualify by doing the five local midweek races. Sonya was unchallenged last year so it would be great to get a few more ladies along to give her some competition.

Good luck everyone - let's have another great year of racing!

St Helens 10k : Sunday 8th March 2015

Twenty five of the club's runners turned out on this cool, wet and windy morning to run the St Helens 10k.

First back for the club, continuing his good form, was John Greenall 1st M50-54 (9th overall, 37:23) followed by Barry Graney 3rd M45-49 (28th, 39:46). Sonya Monaghan 2nd F45-49 (188th, 46:01) was first lady back, just ahead of Julia Eccleston 3rd F40-44 (200th, 46:23).

John Appleton 6th M60+ (277th, 48:05), Keith Williams 52nd M40-44 (356th, 49:38) were next home. Rachel Wilcock 26th FSEN (362th, 50:17) held off Rachel Beesley 27th FSEN (373th, 50:29) who must have had Antony Young 64th M40-44 (399th, 50:57) chasing her down.

Pamela Appleton 3rd F55+ (595th, 53:22) was "helped" by her London Marathon training with Jane Ashcroft 10th F45-49 (612th, 54:37), Gemma Aden 70th FSEN (792th, 57:22) and Linda White 5th F50-54 (827th, 57:45) following.

Looks like a group finish for Stephen Pickavance 20th M55-59 (798th, 58:00), Carolyn Joyce 75th FSEN (800th, 58:01), Sarah O'Donoghue 27th F40-44 (799th, 58:01), Karen Harrison 76th FSEN (847th, 58:01), and Amy Corfield 77th FSEN (804th, 58:02), with Alison Rotheram 20th F45-49 (830th, 58:23) not far behind.

Ian White 51st M50-54 (1042th, 01:02:16), Dorothy Fairhurst 10th F55+ (1254th, 01:04:57), Karen Young 51st F40-44 (1182th, 01:05:03) just drifted out over the hour. Andrea Joyce 67th F45-49 (1511th, 01:13:56), Janet Holmes 19th F55+ (1572th, 01:16:42) and Kay Wilcock 78th F45-49 (1667th, 01:23:48) copmleted the turn out.

Having four climbs up north road means this won't be your fastest 10k but it's local and well supported with a great stadium finish.
